Photographic essay by Mark Clayton on the High Angle Battery, Portland, Dorset.
Built between 1890-1895 as a defence against enemy vessels, the site is now protected under the Ancient Monuments Act and has grade II listing.
Comprising of a warren of dark tunnels and connecting rooms the local youth have used it over the years to hang out, explore and often scare themselves with ghost stories.
This photo project aims to capture the essence of the battery, to convey some of the mystery of the tunnels and as well to record an important part of life growing up on a small island.
