Born in Hong Kong in 1957, Kan Tai Wong was working as a professional photojournalist when, while covering a sports competition in Beijing in April 1989, he witnessed the students who had sparked the largest pro-democracy movement in Chinese history. After a brief return to Hong Kong, he went back to Beijing immediately, knowing that the students had begun a hunger strike. Wong remained in Beijing, continuing to photograph the student protesters until the Tiananmen Square incident on June 4, 1989, and returned to photograph the city in the winter of 1998 and spring of 1999.

Wong published a selection of 64 photographs with Limen Publishing Company in 1990 and self-published a compilation of 108 photographs in 2011. To commemorate the 35th anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests, Zen Foto Gallery is publishing a new edition of Wong’s photographs in a different layout and format.
